Tech-Savvy Students Drive AI and Automation Growth in Southeast Manufacturing
Small and medium-sized manufacturers across South East England are accelerating their digital transformation with the help of Made Smarter South East’s Digital Internship Programme. The government-backed initiative connects manufacturing businesses with university students who bring expertise in artificial intelligence (AI), automation, and digital technologies, helping companies modernize operations while preparing the next generation of digital talent.
Digital Internships Help SMEs Embrace AI
For many manufacturers, limited resources and a shortage of digital specialists make adopting new technologies challenging. The Digital Internship Programme addresses this issue by funding university placements that allow businesses to explore AI solutions, workflow automation, enterprise software, and digital engineering with minimal financial risk.
Students gain valuable industry experience while companies receive fresh ideas and technical expertise to accelerate innovation projects.
AI and Automation Projects Deliver Real Business Value
During the past year, interns have supported a wide variety of technology initiatives, including:
- AI-powered customer support chatbots
- Business process automation
- Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) implementation
- Digital workflow optimization
- Systems integration
- Computer-aided design (CAD) improvements
- Manufacturing process digitization
The programme has already completed several successful internships, with many additional placements currently underway across the region.
Manufacturers Benefit from Emerging Digital Talent
Programme Manager Bryan Vint explained that many manufacturers struggle to dedicate the time and specialist knowledge required to implement digital transformation projects.
By partnering with universities, businesses gain access to talented students who introduce new perspectives and technical skills. The programme enables companies to experiment with AI and automation while helping students develop practical experience that employers increasingly demand.
Real-World Success Stories
Several manufacturers have already seen measurable benefits from participating in the programme.
NightSearcher Modernizes Warehouse Operations
Portable lighting manufacturer NightSearcher partnered with a University of Portsmouth student to support the rollout of a new ERP system and digitize warehouse operations. The additional technical support allowed the company to implement new technology while maintaining day-to-day production.
Bradbury Tracks Develops an AI Chatbot
Family-owned manufacturer Bradbury Tracks collaborated with a University of Southampton AI student to build an intelligent chatbot capable of assisting customers with product specifications and inquiries.
The project proved so successful that the student was later offered a paid position within the company.
Ecologic Developments Improves Digital Design
Sustainable construction manufacturer Ecologic Developments recruited an engineering student to strengthen its digital design-to-production workflow. The internship supported CAD development, project management, and engineering processes during an important stage of company growth.
Art4site Automates Business Operations
Kent-based fine art printing company Art4site worked with a University of Kent computer science student to improve integration between customer systems and internal databases. The project reduced manual data entry, minimized operational errors, and created a more scalable digital workflow.
Students Gain Valuable Industry Experience
The internships also provide students with practical experience beyond the classroom.
Participants reported significant improvements in technical skills, communication, project management, and professional confidence while working on real manufacturing challenges.
Many described the placements as an opportunity to apply university knowledge to commercial AI, automation, software development, and engineering projects that deliver measurable business outcomes.
Supporting the Future of Smart Manufacturing
The Digital Internship Programme forms part of Made Smarter South East’s broader mission to accelerate digital manufacturing across the region. In addition to internships, the initiative offers digital transformation roadmaps, leadership training, workforce development programmes, and match-funded grants of up to £20,000 to help manufacturers invest in advanced technologies.
By combining government support, university expertise, and industry collaboration, the programme is helping manufacturers adopt AI and automation more quickly while building a stronger pipeline of skilled digital professionals for the future.
